Facts about Stroke

  • Stroke affects over 20,000 Australians every year.
  • In 1998, stroke was Australia's second greatest killer (after coronary heart disease), claiming 11,892 lives (9% total deaths).
  • Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in adults.
  • Contrary to popular belief, a stroke does not only affect the elderly. Although two thirds of stroke occur in people over 65 years of age, young people can and do suffer strokes, sometimes at the peak of their working lives. Entire families are affected when someone is disabled, often permanently, by a stroke.
  • About 25 percent of people who suffer a stroke die within one month.
  • For a 45 year old, the risk of having a stroke before age 85 in 1 in 4 for men and 1 in 5 for women.
