Stay
off the grog. The most likely way a nice bloke like you will end
up in the slammer,
short of doing a bank, is by getting drunk and acting stupid. Ordinary
men can behave in
a way that's completely out of character when they've drink too much,
according to
criminal-law specialist, Chris O'Brien. There's a huge range of alcohol-related
incidents
that lead to violence and they'll also land you inside.
Repeat drink-driving is also a very common way men end up in custody.
O'Brien says:
"I've seen this scenario hundreds of times - mum and dad are at home
having a few drinks
and start arguing. Dad's angry, leaves his brains in the bottom of his
glass and jumps
into a car."
Take a deep breath and blow, if you're stopped by the booze bus.
If you refuse you
could end up with more trouble than you bargained for, according to
senior constable
Marcus Fairfax of NSW Police.
He says that many men think they can avoid a drink-driving charge by
refusing a breath
test. "Do that and you're likely to be charged with Driving Under the
Influence," he
cautions. "That carries the same penalty as a charge resulting from
a high-range alcohol
reading and if it's proved, it'll cost you $2000 and you'll lose your
licence. Give a breath
sample and you'll be charged with Prescribed Concentration of Alcohol.
Depending on
your alcohol reading, the penalties for that are likely to be much less."
